Science
At Holy Trinity, we have now moved to White Rose Science. After the success of the maths scheme, we have invested in the full science scheme for children, including amazing workbooks and teaching resources.
Through this scheme, children develop a wide range of scientific vocabulary, have opportunities to plan, take part in an evaluate investigations and think as scientists. The scheme moves in small steps, building upon knowledge gained from the previous year. children also have some exposure to the previous years' topics through retrieval style questions at the beginning of every lesson. This allows for children to regularly recall previously acquired knowledge.
This is a very well thought out, child centered scheme that is an incredible tool for learning in science.
Keep an eye out on this page for updates!
Science
Starting September 2025, we will now be using White Rose for our science. As the maths scheme was so successful, we decided to invest in the scheme throughout school. It has been recieved well by the children, who are very fond of the current maths work books, and are excited about the science scheme.
The scheme allows children to study in small steps, with vocabulary and scientific language being at the core of the teaching. The scheme allows for interesting experiments made relevant to the children through a broad choice of topics and themes.
Science Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement
Intent
At Holy Trinity Primary School, it is our intention to provide a high-quality science education that provides children with the foundations they need to recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life.
Our curriculum, through White Rose Science, allows children to become enquiry-based learners collaborating through researching, investigating and evaluating experiences. It will encourage respect for living organisms and for the physical environment.
Teachers will ensure that all children are exposed to high quality teaching and learning experiences. These will hook the children’s interest, enabling them to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They will be encouraged to ask questions about the world around them and work scientifically to further their conceptual understanding and scientific knowledge.
Children will be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes. It will provide opportunities for the critical evaluation of evidence and rational explanation of scientific phenomena as well as opportunity to apply their mathematical knowledge to their understanding of science, including collecting, presenting and analysing data. Children will be immersed in key scientific vocabulary, which supports in the acquisition of scientific knowledge and understanding.
Implementation
Holy Trinity Primary School use White Rose Science as a scheme for learning, whilst also allowing for additional time to consolidate work through additional investigation time.
The sheme is built around scientific enquiry. Chilren will do this through exploring, talking about, testing and developing ideas about everyday phenomena and the relationships between living things and familiar environments, and by beginning to develop their ideas about functions, relationships and interactions. They ask their own questions about what they observe and make some decisions about which types of scientific enquiry are likely to be the best ways of answering them, including observing changes over time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying things, carrying out simple comparative and fair tests and finding things out using secondary sources of information. They draw simple conclusions and use scientific language to talk and write about what they have found out..
Impact
The successful approach to the teaching of science at Holy Trinity Primary School will result in a fun, engaging, high quality science education, that provides children with the foundations for understanding the world that they can take with them once they complete their primary education.
Assessment at Holy Trinity Primary School is teacher based and formed using formal strategies and informal strategies.
Formative assessment is used as the main tool for assessing the impact of Science at Holy Trinity Primary School as it allows for misconceptions and gaps to be addressed more immediately rather than building on insecure scientific foundations.
Children at Holy Trinity Primary School will:
- demonstrate a love of science work and an interest in further study and work in this field
- retain knowledge that is pertinent to Science with a real life context.
- be able to question ideas and reflect on knowledge.
- be able to articulate their understanding of scientific concepts and be able to reason scientifically using rich language linked to science.
- demonstrate a high love of mathematical skills through their work, organising, recording and interpreting results.
- work collaboratively and practically to investigate and experiment.
- achieve age related expectations in Science at the end of their cohort year.
